An online presence

As the world is becoming more and more digital, I do think that having an online presence is important. I currently have an Instagram account, LinkedIn and online portfolio. Each serves a different purpose.
I started using Instagram for my creative work from my Alevels, I used it initially as a bit of a creative diary or blog, just uploading what I was working on and in particular the things I was proud of. For the next few years, although I was posting publicly, at the time it felt like it was just for me. Now that I am actively seeking job roles and internships and have been for a few years my use of this platform has changed. The content I post now is much more considered and I will try to post my most successful work, (even when its the unfinished stuff) more like an informal portfolio.
Instagram itself is constantly changing (much to the detriment of creatives) which brings its own challenges but I do still think it is an important platform to show yourself and your work in perhaps a more casual and personal format than your CV and portfolio.
My LinkedIn account serves as more of a professional networking platform, with access to industry professionals I generally post about my achievements and skills. I need to make better use of this platform to build my network and build industry connections
My online portfolio is much more formal, considered and curated than instagram or LinkedIn and I share some of the content on online portfolio websites such as ARTSTHREAD which is a good platform for contacts to find you and your projects.
I do believe that your presence online and which type of platform you prioritise depends on your goals. For example a freelancer might rely on Instagram more than LinkedIn to find customers but someone entering an existing company might prioritise their online portfolio & LinkedIn over Instagram.
Concluding thoughts
Being your own social media manager is part and parcel of being a creative in the current digital world. We are told that self promotion is key to getting your name out there, getting recognised and ultimately helping you to get employed. The sad thing is that sometimes this can get in the way of your creative practice and the pressure to post can feel overwhelming. There is a reason that big companies hire social media managers.
